|The Turkish art and cultural scene developed tremendously fast within the last years, particularly in Istanbul. In the 1980s young Turkish artists broke with the traditional art of their country, at first unnoticed by the Turkish public and the global art world. After years of isolation this generation of artists in the 1990s indicated their wish to speak also internationally and set decisive examples - politically engaged, aesthetically radical and with new artistic arguments. more...||
Fulya Erdemci, curator of this year's Istanbul Biennial, and Bige Örer, Director of the Istanbul Foundation for Culture and Arts, allow a first glance at the concept of the Istanbul Biennial with this group show on public space, co-curated by Kevser Güler.
Neuer Berliner Kunstverein and the project space Tanas, founded in 2008, stand for a practice of transnational dialogue between the cultures. After the political and cultural rapprochement between Turkey with its neighboring regions and the European Union, the time is ripe for a survey exhibition, which is designed in a prospective way. Turkey is the starting point of the investigation, but the show is looking much further, to the regions formerly belonging to the periphery, which during the last 20 years have experienced a boost of modernization and internationalization.
